Ag equipment market trends for September/October 2024

In September, the used agricultural equipment market experienced notable shifts, with supply and demand playing pivotal roles across various categories. In the combine market, prices for models such as John Deere’s S770 and S780 continued to decline, with Class 7 and 8 combines seeing sharp drops in value over the past few months. Case IH’s 8250 faced similar depreciation, with auction values suppressed by an influx of supply. However, some stability was noted for John Deere’s S790 and X9 1100 models, indicating a potential leveling off in certain segments of the combine market.

Row crop tractors displayed a “bipolar” market behavior, where smaller models saw mild declines of 5-10%, while larger tractors, such as John Deere’s 8R series, faced steep drops in value due to oversupply. Four-wheel drive tractors followed a similar pattern, with values plunging by 30% as inventory surged.

On the bright side, planters remained relatively stable, with supply being managed judiciously, although auction prices were sometimes significantly lower than dealer listings. These price trends highlight the importance of monitoring equipment categories closely and adjusting fleet management strategies accordingly.
